Lantern Floating Hawaii Ceremony

When, where: May 31, Ala Moana Beach Park

Highlights: This annual Memorial Day event honoring fallen soldiers and deceased loved ones features a Buddhist tradition in which candlelit lanterns are set afloat with prayers for peace. Local and international performers provide musical accompaniment.

Huck Finn Jubilee

When, where: June 18-20, Mojave Narrows Regional Park

Highlights: This commemoration of Mark Twain’s 175th birthday will include stage performances, a Huck Finn look-alike contest, a treasure hunt, a banjo competition, music workshops and the California State Arm-Wrestling Championship. Also: the chance to try whitewashing a fence, building a river raft or climbing a greased pole. Country, gospel and bluegrass musicians perform, and food and craft vendors peddle their goods.

Cost: $20 for Saturday and Sunday; $15 for Friday; $5 for ages 6 to 12; free for children younger than 6

VENTURA

Salute! A Festival to Celebrate Finely Crafted Beer & Food

When, where: June 19, San Buenaventura State Beach

Highlights: More than 50 craft breweries from across America converge to offer samples of their suds; your ticket price covers all the beer and food you can consume. Area hotels are offering deals and packages.

Cost: $50 advance; $60 beginning June 1. VIP tickets $125 advance; $135 beginning June 1. General admission includes a souvenir tasting glass, unlimited beer and food tasting and live entertainment. VIP tickets also include a reserve beer tasting with brewers, special beer-and-food pairings and access to a VIP lounge. Proceeds benefit Food Share of Ventura County.

Solstice Festival and Hero Games

When, where: June 19, various downtown locations, including Town Square

Highlights: Celebrate the longest day of the year during the newly combined Solstice Festival and Hero Games. The latter pits police, fire and military units against each other in friendly skill- and strength-based contests. The former features a midnight concert under the sun, street performers, kids’ events, a car show and skateboard and roller-derby demos. The Mayor’s Marathon happens the same day.

SAN DIEGO

Spreckels Summer International Organ Festival

When, where: June 21-Aug. 30, Balboa Park

Highlights: Pack a picnic: Monday evenings in summer, San Diego’s Spreckels Organ Society presents 11 concerts by some of the world’s best organists. Kids and pets are welcome.

Cost: Concerts are free. On opening night, June 21, a Mexican buffet is available for $30, including beer and wine.
