The next steps in California’s redistricting process:

On Thursday, the state auditor randomly selected eight people from a pool of 36 applicants to serve on a Citizens Redistricting Commission.

— By Dec. 31, the eight commissioners must select six more people from the same pool to serve on the commission. Their decision must weigh the goal of making sure the panel is ethnically and geographically diverse.

—By March 31, census data for California will be released from the U.S. Census Bureau to be used by the commission to draw new district boundaries for state legislators, members of the Board of Equalization and members of Congress from California.
