Deputies kill man attacking his mother’s boyfriend
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man who was slashing his mother’s boyfriend with a cleaver Friday night in Rowland Heights, authorities said Saturday.
Deputies were called to an apartment at the 18500 block of Colima Road shortly after 9 p.m. and flagged by a woman telling them her son was attacking the other man, said Deputy Mark Pope.
It was unclear how many deputies rushed into the apartment, but once in there, they saw a man straddling the woman’s boyfriend and slashing his head with a meat cleaver, Pope said.
“The deputies ordered the suspect to stop and drop the cleaver several times,” Pope said. “The suspect ignored the deputies’ command and continued slashing the victim.”
One of the deputies then fired his weapon, striking the assailant three times in the torso, Pope said. He ran to the kitchen, collapsed and died. The slashing victim suffered severe wounds to his head, neck and upper torso and was taken to a hospital. He was expected to survive, authorities said.
Investigators have not released either man’s identity, and they have opened an investigation into the deputy-involved shooting, which is routine for such incidents. Authorities also did not identify the deputy involved in the shooting.
