Malaysia deal: $1,299 for five nights + airfare from Los Angeles

Tourism Malaysia and Singapore Airlines Vacations are teaming up to offer a $1,299 per person, five-night air-hotel package to Kuala Lumpur, with an optional extension.

The deal: The Special Malaysia Package includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles to Kuala Lumpur; five nights at the luxury Istana Hotel Kuala Lumpur City Centre; daily breakfast; airport and hotel transfers; a half-day city tour with lunch; and a 10% food discount.

The package starts at $1,299, plus some taxes and fees, and is based on double occupancy. The deal holds for departures from San Francisco, New York and Houston at the same price.

For an extra $299, plus taxes and fees, you can extend the trip by two nights by flying within Malaysia to the cities of Panang, Kuching or Langkawi or flying to Singapore. The add-on includes hotel, daily breakfast, a half-day tour and airport/hotel transfers.

When: You must buy the package by Nov. 15 for travel through Nov. 30 or Jan. 1 through March 31.

I opted to phone Globotours to start sketching out an itinerary. I selected a Feb. 1 departure so that I would be in Kuala Lumpur in time for Chinese New Year (which is Feb. 3 this year) and also requested a two-day add-on to Singapore.

The reservation agent sent me an e-mail with a sample itinerary and costs, which, with taxes and fees plus the stop in Singapore, came to $1,735 per person. Note that prices are slightly higher for weekend travel.
