New York: $79 rooms at Jane Hotel

New York City in January or February? OK, it’s cold, but it’s also a less touristy time to see the city. And it’s when the edgy little Jane Hotel is offering single rooms at just $79 a night. So bundle up and make your goosebumps disappear by ducking into “Houdini: Art and Magic” at the Jewish Museum in Manhattan, which runs Oct. 29 through March 27.

The deal: The Jane Hotel, in the West Village near the Hudson River, has a kicky little twist: Its 200 compact rooms, dubbed “cabins,” are more like sleeping accommodations on trains than hotel rooms. No matter. With sweet deals in New York hard to come by, I get the no-frills, no-nonsense setup.

Browse the hotel’s website (it’s so fun you may never leave) and view rooms and bathrooms, plus a list of amenities (examples: complimentary bicycles, free Wi-Fi and Internet access, killer neighborhood) to make sure you like the vibe.

The $79-per-night rate, excluding tax, applies to a “standard” cabin, about 50 square feet. That’s a single bed (I know, you thought they were obsolete), meaning a room for one with a shared bathroom. A room with bunk beds and a shared bath goes for $99, plus tax.

When: The offer is good January and February, based on availability.

Tested: I checked online and found a standard cabin available at the $79 pretax rate Jan. 7 through 11. The five-night tab was $395 plus tax, which you could easily pay for a singe night’s stay elsewhere in the city. The price represents a 20% savings off the usual room rate at the Jane.

You may book this deal online or by phone. But note that there’s no “special offers” menu tab on the hotel’s website. The low rate pops up when you fill in your dates.

Contact: The Jane Hotel, 113 Jane St.; (212) 924-6700.
