Update: The Galaxy needs no worse than a tie in Sunday night’s regular-season finale to win the Supporters’ Shield, which goes to the team with the best regular-season record and carries with it home-field advantage through the first two rounds of the MLS playoffs. Sunday night’s result will also determine whether the Galaxy’s first-round opponent is Dallas or Seattle. The Galaxy, which enters its final match tied with Real Salt Lake with a league-best 56 points, handed Dallas one of its three losses this season, winning 1-0 in late May in a match Dallas Coach Schellas Hyndman called his team’s worst performance of the season. His players took the criticism to heart, going unbeaten in their next 19 matches, a streak that ended last week against Real Salt Lake. The Galaxy, meanwhile, has been a bit uneven lately, going 4-4-1 since a mid-August win over the Red Bulls. A couple of Galaxy players will be chasing individual records Sunday, with striker Edson Buddle needing a goal to tie San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski atop the MLS scoring list while goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts can break the franchise record for goals-against average by holding Dallas to no more than two goals.
