Update: Having lost back-to-back league games for the first time this season, the Galaxy finds itself in a position to be caught or overtaken by a couple of clubs. Los Angeles is only three points ahead of defending MLS champion Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference and only two points ahead of the Eastern Conference-leading Columbus Crew for the overall top spot in MLS. The Fire, in fifth place in the East and needing a victory to keep within reach of a playoff spot, on Friday announced that longtime U.S. international forward Brian McBride, a veteran of three World Cups, would retire at the end of this season. McBride, 38, was the first player selected in the league’s inaugural draft in 1996 and played 95 games for the U.S. The Fire scored three times in the first 20 minutes against the Galaxy in Carson on Aug. 1 en route to a 3-2 victory. Los Angeles is 7-3-2 on the road this season.
