Whooping cough: A headline on an article in the Sept. 17 LATExtra section incorrectly tied flu shots to protection against whooping cough, also known as pertussis. As the article noted, health officials are urging pertussis vaccinations for anyone who will be in contact with babies. In addition, officials have begun their annual push to urge people to seek seasonal flu shots.

Stem cell face-lifts: A Sept. 13 Health section article assessing stem cell face-lifts offered by two Beverly Hills doctors said that Dr. Nathan Newman charges between $5,500 and $9,500 for the procedure and Dr. Richard Ellenbogen charges $15,000 to $25,000. The story should have noted that Ellenbogen often performs a surgical face-lift along with his injection of stem cells.

UC Regents: An article in the Sept. 17 LATExtra section about actions by the University of California board said that $250,000 of a $410,000 raise for UCLA hospital executive David Feinberg would come from private donations and the rest from hospital revenues. UCLA officials say that all of Feinberg’s salary increase will come from a privately endowed $10-million fund and that hospital revenues temporarily used for the extra salary will be repaid by that endowment.

Pope in Britain: A headline with a photo of Pope Benedict XVI with Queen Elizabeth II in the Sept. 17 Section A referred to the queen as “Her Highness.” In fact, the queen is referred to as “Her Majesty”; her husband and children are known as His or Her Highness.

Seattle police shootings: An article in the Sept. 17 Section A about police shootings in the Seattle area referred to a Baptist pastor being shot to death by a sheriff’s deputy. That incident happened in Spokane Valley, in eastern Washington.
