Al Gore to campaign for Kendrick Meek in Florida

Former Vice President Al Gore will make a rare campaign appearance, traveling to a Tampa rally on behalf of Democrat Rep. Kendrick Meek, running third in the topsy-turvy Florida race for U.S. Senate.

The Meek campaign on Wednesday announced a Sept. 30 appearance by Gore, a Nobel Prize winner for his work in fighting global warming.

“I am honored to have Vice President Gore visit Florida in support of my campaign,” Meek stated. “Together, we’ll show Floridians that there is just one candidate who will stand up for Florida’s environment and middle-class families in this state.”

Meek won the Democratic nomination in a hard-fought primary against Palm Beach billionaire Jeff Greene. He faces Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican running as an independent, and Marco Rubio, the Republican candidate who blocked Crist from the nomination by questioning whether he was conservative enough for the “tea party” movement.

Polls in recent weeks show Rubio gaining in support while Crist has faltered and Meek has remained locked in third place. The TPM poll tracker gives Rubio about 39%, Crist 30% and Meek just over 21%.
