President Obama’s vacation, by the numbers

Air Force One touched down at Andrews Air Force Base at 11:03 am Eastern on Tuesday, bringing the first family back to Washington after what the president called a “terrific” holiday vacation in his home state of Hawaii. As he settles back at the White House to prepare for battles ahead, here’s a look at some statistics from his getaway.

12: Number of days Obama spent in Hawaii, one more than in 2009 when the trip was consumed with responding to the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a U.S.-bound jet.

5: Days the vacation was delayed because of the lame-duck session of Congress

2: Number of days he extended his stay, eventually leaving Jan. 3 instead of Jan. 1.

116: E-mails from the White House press office sent between the time of Obama’s departure for Hawaii until his return.

88: E-mails that were pool reports, dispatches from a reporter traveling within the president’s security bubble to chronicle his activities.

65: Tweets by White House press secretary Robert Gibbs (@presssec), who fielded questions on the social-media site from users twice during Obama’s vacation. Gibbs did not travel to Hawaii with the president.

0: Briefings for the traveling press corps held by deputy White House press secretary Bill Burton, who traveled to Hawaii with the president.

22: Trips to Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kailua, where President Obama worked out, went to the beach with family, greeted troops on Christmas Day, golfed, bowled and played basketball.

1: Days, out of 12, that the president did not start his day with a workout. He traveled each morning, usually at 8 a.m., to the Semper Fit club at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

0: Shirtless photos of the president, who only went to Pyramid Rock Beach on the grounds of the marine base, where access is restricted to the general public

5: Golf outings by the president, after going nearly two months without playing. Three rounds were at the Klipper course at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

5: Bills signed by the president in Hawaii, including the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

6: Recess appointments made by the president on Dec. 29. Saying Republicans had engaged in unprecedented obstruction of administration nominees, Obama seated four ambassadors — including the first to Syria since 2005, a deputy attorney general and the head of the Government Printing Office.

4: Books Obama read on his vacation, including “Ronald Reagan: Role of a Lifetime.”

50%: Obama’s job approval rating, according to a Gallup survey released the day of his return. It’s nearly equal to where his approval rating stood at the same point a year ago.
