Cirque Berzerk From the big top to the big time, Cirque Berzerk begins a nearly month-long residency at Club Nokia. Cirque-goers can expect more of the troupe’s signature pairing of traditional circus and aerial arts with punk rock and cabaret noir influences. Club Nokia, 800 W. Olympic Blvd., L.A. MOVIES

Palm Springs International Film Festival L.A. may get most of the film-buzz juice in SoCal, but this festival is an underrated host of touted docs, shorts and features every year. Highlights for 2011 include “Juan,” a portrait of an incorrigible cad, and “Lula, the Son of Brazil,” about outgoing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Thursdays to Sundays through Jan. 17. Jeremiah The L.A. Philharmonic’s charismatic and emotive Gustavo Dudamel leads the orchestra through Leonard Bernstein’s First Symphony, “Jeremiah,” an account of the prophet Jeremiah and the Book of Lamentations. The work’s three movements will be sung in Hebrew by mezzo Kelley O’Connor. The program includes a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and John Adams’ “Slonimsky’s Earbox.” Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 S. Grand Ave., L.A. The Melvins The band, which has been together for nearly three decades, begins a month-long, Friday-night residency at the Satellite in Silver Lake (formerly Spaceland).
