Galaxy signs Colombia’s Juan Pablo Angel

The Galaxy signed Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel to a multiyear contract Wednesday, gambling that the 35-year-old will be able to accomplish as much as Edson Buddle did in 2010.

Buddle scored a team-high 17 goals last season, second-best in Major League Soccer, before leaving to join FC Ingolstadt in Germany.

Angel, a former Colombia national team player, is the third forward acquired this month by the Galaxy, which has also added Chad Barrett and Adam Cristman to its front line.

In four MLS seasons, Angel scored 58 goals in 102 regular-season games for the New York Red Bulls after equally productive spells with Atletico Nacional in Colombia, River Plate in Argentina and Aston Villa in England.

He will join Landon Donovan and David Beckham as the third designated player on the Galaxy roster.

“I know the responsibilities that a striker has and people will, at the end of the day, judge you for your goals,” Angel said Wednesday. “I hope I can settle in with the team as soon as possible and I can do what I have always done in every club I’ve been.

“With the services that I can get from the likes of Landon and David, there is a good chance that I’ll be able to finish some of those chances.”
