Obama to call for extension of middle-class tax cuts
WASHINGTON -- President Obama today plans to begin pushing for an extension of tax cuts for the middle class, a message he and his surrogates are scheduled to push in events across the country.
Income tax cuts initially passed under President George W. Bush are set to expire at the end of the year. Obama favors extending the cuts for one more year for those earning less than $250,000 annually. Republicans favor extending all the cuts.
Obama plans a White House announcement today, according to an official familiar with the plans, as well as a series of television interviews with local-station anchors from several markets in battleground and other states.
To “amplify” the president’s message, the official said, his reelection campaign is planning news conferences involving Obama surrogates in New Hampshire, Nevada, Colorado and Florida over the course of the coming week.
In addition, former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs is expected to appear on the “Today” and “Morning Joe” shows today.
This week, Obama’s schedule calls for him to travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a campaign event on Tuesday, and to Virginia for more stump time on Friday and Saturday.
