1976 Olympic gold medalist Udo Beyer admits to doping during Games

Former Olympic shot put champion Udo Beyer has admitted to doping throughout his career, including when he won the gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics.

Beyer made the comments in the documentary “The Lone Wolf,” which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival on Thursday.

“I knew everything that was done with me. Things I did were my own decision,” Beyer says in the film. “I gave myself the right to do it. There were things I refused and there were things I did. And there were no secret things.

Everything else is hard work. And if you are not properly trained, you can swallow as many pills as you want … you will never be a top athlete.”

Beyer goes on to say that doping is not why he won the gold medal, but that he won it because he was the best.

“I was the right Olympic champion because I was the best in the competition,” he says in the film.
