New details in Hernandez case
A man linked to the murder case against former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez told police Hernandez admitted firing the fatal shots, and a vehicle wanted in a double killing in Boston a year before had been rented in Hernandez’s name, according to documents filed Tuesday in Florida.
The documents say Hernandez associate Carlos Ortiz told Massachusetts investigators that another man, Ernest Wallace, said Hernandez admitted shooting semipro football player Odin Lloyd in an industrial park near Hernandez’s home in North Attleborough, Mass. The documents were filed in court by the Miramar, Fla., police department to justify a search of Wallace’s home in that city.
The documents also say that while investigating Lloyd’s killing, police conducted searches in Hernandez’s hometown, Bristol, Conn., that turned up a vehicle wanted in connection with a July 2012 double homicide in Boston. Police say the vehicle had been rented in Hernandez’s name.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in Lloyd’s killing. His legal team did not return email messages Tuesday.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions agreed to terms on a $53-million, three-year extension to keep him under contract through 2017, according to a person familiar with the deal.
The person, who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the agreement has not been announced, said Stafford will make $41.5 million in guarantees as part of the new contract.

U.S. rolls over Belize, 6-1, in Gold Cup
Striker Chris Wondolowski scored a first-half hat trick in a 6-1 victory for the U.S. men’s national team over Belize in the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Portland, Ore.
Landon Donovan had a goal and two assists, becoming the first player with at least 50 goals and 50 assists for the national team.
Wondolowski is the third American to score three goals in a Gold Cup match, joining Donovan and Brian McBride. The United States has won four Gold Cups since the tournament’s inception in 1991.
Michael Barrantes scored two second-half goals and Costa Rica defeated Cuba, 3-0, in the first Gold Cup game at Portland. Cuba’s winless streak in Gold Cup matches is 12.

Louisville’s Ware may return in October
Injured Louisville guard Kevin Ware could be back on the court by October.
Cardinals Coach Rick Pitino said that he’s encouraged by Ware’s rehabilitation, which recently has included riding a stationary bicycle. Ware broke his right leg in a gruesome manner during Louisville’s regional final victory over Duke, and his injury became a rallying point in the Cardinals’ run to their third NCAA title.
Washington wide receiver Kasen Williams was fined and received a misdemeanor citation after he was pulled over for speeding and investigation of driving under the influence near Chelan, Wash., in May.
News of Williams’ arrest emerged Tuesday after Huskies Coach Steve Sarkisian released a statement saying that the school was aware of the incident and that any discipline handed down to the receiver would be kept internal.
The Ducks signed free-agent right wing Zack Stortini and defenseman Nolan Yonkman to one-year contracts.
Stortini, 27, has played in 257 NHL games with Edmonton (2007-11) and Nashville (2011-12), scoring 13 points (nine assists) in 2009-10 with the Oilers.
Yonkman, 32, is a former second-round pick who played the last two seasons with Florida after being in the minor leagues from 2006 to ’11.
