Feds investigate Jeep Liberty for fire risk
Federal safety regulators have opened a preliminary investigation into the 2012 Jeep Liberty SUV for a possible fire risk in the driver’s door.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has received two reports of fires from consumers, with at least one person injured as a result.
The probe covers 79,252 Jeep Libertys.

In both instances, the fires allegedly started near the driver’s door power window switch. During the fires, the vehicles’ owners reported the windows and door locks started operating on their own. Drivers had to stop the vehicle and escape through the passenger side, according to the NHTSA.
One vehicle caught fire a second time after it was repaired, the safety agency said.
Jeep’s parent company Chrysler said it is fully cooperating with the investigation.
“Customer safety is paramount at Chrysler Group,” said spokesman Eric Mayne. “Accordingly, our engineers are investigating these two reports while also fully supporting the inquiry initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.”
The NHTSA will now investigate the scope of these incidents to see whether a recall is warranted. No recall is planned at this time.
