Erik Buell unwraps his new street bike, the EBR1190SX

Motorcycle design legend Erik Buell has taken the wraps off a new street bike, which he’s dubbed the EBR1190SX.

The East Troy, Wis.-based designer and builder announced Wednesday that the new street version of his race-winning EBR1190RS will be headed to consumers soon.

Fans can expect to see specs and pricing on July 1.

The cost of the new machine will be a little less than the EBR1190RX, a previously released street-legal version of the RS, which retails for $18,995. The SX will be a slightly sportier version of the RX, with a more upright rider position more appropriate for the street than the track.

The new machines, which are already in production, could be in dealer showrooms as early as the end of the summer. They will be sold in red, white and black versions.

Buell is an engineer -- and a former racer and mechanic -- who in the 1990s partnered with Harley-Davidson to produce the well-received Buell line of motorcycles. They were sport bikes that used Harley engines and featured a number of Buell-invented innovations that reduced weight, increased power and improved handling.

Harley ended its Buell program in 2009. A month later, Buell announced plans to build motorcycles under the EBR badge. His first street-legal bike, the EBR1190RX, hit dealerships last fall.

Buell recently partnered with Hero, the New Delhi-based motorcycle company said to be the largest two-wheeled-vehicle manufacturer in the world. Hero owns a large minority share in Erik Buell Racing, maker of the EBR line of motorcycles.
