Nokia issues fix and $100 credit for bug in Lumia 900 smartphone
If you bought a Nokia Lumia 900, you’re getting your money back. Nokia found a software bug in its $99 Windows-based smartphone and is giving everyone who has one a credit that covers the cost of the phone.
“As a gesture of good will, every individual who has already purchased a Nokia Lumia 900 — or who will purchase one between now and April 21st — will receive a $100 credit to their AT&T bill from Nokia,” the company said on its website.
The phone apparently has a memory management issue that can cause a drop in data connectivity. The company says it is “purely in the phone software, and is not related to either phone hardware or the network itself.”
A software update is expected to be available via Zune “on or about” Monday. You can wait for that — five days can be interminable when you have to live without your phone — or swap your current Lumia 900 for an updated one (no word on when those might be available).
The Lumia 900 is Nokia’s big comeback vehicle. The company, once the big dog of smartphones having practically created the market segment, ceded ground to Apple and Google with the advent of their now ubiquitous devices. Nokia now holds less than 1% of the U.S. market for smartphones.
The Lumia, which runs Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating system, went on sale in the U.S. on Sunday.
