CES 2013: LG to debut new Google TV lineup
Electronics manufacturer LG has firmed up details about its next big thing, just in time to make whatever gadgets are already under the tree seem near-obsolete.
The company will expand its line of Google TVs next year, adding two new models in varying screen sizes. LG will debut the TVs, which feature Google’s recently revamped service, at the Consumer Electonics Show in Las Vegas next month, the company said in a statement.
The models will come with the pre-installed OnLive gaming platform, a full Web browser and a redesigned remote equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard and built-in microphone for an improved voice recognition search.
Users will be able to search for both TV and Internet content with a single voice command, the company says. The lineup will be offered in various sizes ranging from 42 inches to 60 inches, including a premium model that will employ the company’s CINEMA 3D screens.
Google, which operates the world’s most popular search engine, is trying to get more TV manufacturers to pick up its software. Google recently redesigned Google TV to better integrate YouTube and open up the platform for Android app developers.
LG, which promised it would offer the next big thing in Google TV, could be trying to make a jump ahead of rumors that a highly anticipated redesign of AppleTV could launch in 2013.
Apple has been quietly negotiating with cable companies and content providers to bring a set-top box to consumers with plans to provide whole seasons of popular TV shows, a streamlined iPad-like interface and a DVR service that stores shows on the Internet.
