Money Minute: Paid time off? The U.S. is no holiday [Video]

In honor of Presidents Day, let’s take a look at how much vacation and holiday time Americans enjoy -- or not.

The typical European country (along with Australia and New Zealand) requires that workers get at least 20 days of paid leave annually. In France, that number’s a whopping 30 days.

In the U.S., we’re guaranteed all of zero days of paid leave.

Europeans, Australians and New Zealanders are also guaranteed a certain number of paid holidays each year, as many as 13 days in some cases.

In the U.S., we’re guaranteed zero paid holidays.

Basically, all our paid time off is at the whim of our employers. They dole it out as much (or as little) as they please.

OK, so now you’re saying: Yeah, but look how productive we Americans are. Our economic competitiveness is the envy of the developed world.

True. According to the World Economic Forum, the U.S. has the fourth-most competitive economy worldwide. Very impressive.

On the other hand, Sweden has the second-most competitive economy. And the Swedes get five weeks off per year.
