Earnings releases postponed because of Hurricane Sandy

Some investors won’t get to sell on the news -- not that they could trade on U.S. stock exchanges anyway.

Hurricane Sandy closed the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Monday, as the monster storm threatens the East Coast. It was the first unscheduled shutdown of U.S. equity markets since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The storm also led a number of companies to delay releasing their third-quarter earnings results Monday and Tuesday.

Among the major companies putting off announcing their results until later in the week were pharma giant Pfizer Inc., financial data provider Thomson Reuters Corp. and NRG Energy Inc.

Corporate earnings aside, investors will be awaiting October’s U.S. unemployment report, which is due Friday. CNBC reported the U.S. Department of Labor had yet to determine whether it would delay releasing the report because of Sandy.
