Airlines waive rebooking fee as storm brews in the East

Several of the nation’s largest airlines are waiving frees to rebook flights that may be affected by a fierce storm heading for New England and other parts of the Northeast.

Already more than 300 flights had been canceled Thursday, mostly in Chicago, Toronto, Milwaukee and Detroit, with nearly 400 more flights canceled for Friday, according to the flight-tracking website flightaware.com.

Fees to rebook nonrefundable tickets range from $30 to $150, depending on the airline.

The airlines that are waiving such fees--including United, US Airways and Delta, among others--are limiting the offer to only a handful of airports in the storm’s path and only for flights on Friday and Saturday.

Passengers flying to the East Coast over the next two days should check with their airline to see if they qualify to rebook without a charge.

The National Weather Service issued the following warning Thursday about the storm: “As much as one to two feet of snow is forecast from the New York City metro area to Maine, with localized heavier amounts possible. This, in addition to wind gusts as high as 60-75 mph will create significant impacts to transportation and power. Coastal flooding is also possible from Boston northward.”
