When you’re the chairman of a giant tech company, you get to try things first.

That’s what Google Chairman Eric Schmidt was seen doing at the Allen & Co. annual media and technology conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, where on Thursday he was spotted with Motorola’s Moto X smartphone next to his ears.

The Moto X is Motorola’s next flagship smartphone, and the company began promoting it earlier this month with an ad just before the Fourth of July.

The device will be highly customizable and it will be manufactured in the U.S. For its marketing campaign, Motorola chose the tagline “Designed by You. Assembled in the USA.”

But until Thursday, no images of the Moto X had been revealed. The device handled by Schmidt had a wide white back cover with a large camera lens centered near the top of the phone. It resembles the HTC One, another Android smartphone.

The Moto X is expected to be released before October.
