Howard Hughes haunt in Palm Springs retains its period authenticity
A sale is pending for a Palm Springs retreat where tycoon entrepreneur and filmmaker Howard Hughes once lived.
Listed for sale at $1.2 million, the Midcentury Modern-style home is among a handful of Coachella Valley properties with ties to the reclusive billionaire. Other celebrities to have occupied the house include actress Eva Gabor and Emmy-winning writer-producer Paul W. Keyes.
Built in 1957, the post-and-beam abode has been restored to preserve its original elements. Whitewashed brickwork, walls of glass and a period kitchen with vintage tile and appliances are among the details.
A wood-beam ceiling and tile floors add character to the living room and a pair of master suites, including one with a wall fireplace. There are three en suite bedrooms within the 2,400 square feet of living space.
Expansive decking extends the living space outdoors and takes in views of the mountains and the valley floor. A staircase leads down the sloping property to a swimming pool with a canvas-topped cabana.

Hughes, who died in 1976 at age 70, left his mark on the aerospace and film industries. He set multiple speed records flying, owned Trans World Airlines and made such films as “Hell’s Angels” (1930), “Scarface” (1932) and “The Outlaw” (1943).
