Encouraging teens to camp out in front of the computer [Live chat]

I recall that the best times I had at summer camp always involved the crafts, whether it was making paper from blades of grass or creating vehicles from recycled materials. But that often required paying a pretty penny and packing lots of sunscreen and bug spray.

Going to camp these days can be as simple as signing on to Google+. The folks at Make magazine are offering again this year their free monthlong virtual summer camp for teens.

Just by clicking in to a video hangout every weekday at 11 a.m. Pacific time, kids are transported to Maker Camp, a community of “makers,” learning to build such things as a 2-liter motor boat, a bike tail pipe, a pedal-powered phone charger or a rocket-propelled toy car.

This year already more than 15,000 people have signed up for Maker Camp, and more than 10,000 campers have joined the Maker Camp Community. Maker Camp 2013 started up July 8 and goes through Aug. 16.

Today at 10 a.m. PDT, we will be chatting with Dale Dougherty, founder, president and CEO of Maker Media, and Sherry Huss, Maker Media vice president for publishing, e-commerce and events. You’re invited to join the video chat live or later via the archived video.
