A Noise Within reports upswing in audiences in new location
A Noise Within has reported an upswing in audiences in its first season at its new location in Pasadena. The classical repertory theater company, which was located in Glendale for close to 20 years, began performances at its new venue in October.
The company said it saw its roster of ticket subscribers nearly double in size for the 2011-12 season to approximately 2,100 subscriptions, from some 1,100. Single-ticket sales also saw an increase, with 7,046 more tickets sold this season than the previous season, according to the company.
The most recent season at a A Noise Within featured five productions, versus six productions in the previous season. The company said it played to an average of 90% capacity audience for the most recent season.
“We were expecting an upswing in single tickets, so the subscriber upswing was a bigger surprise to us,” said Julia Rodriguez-Elliott, co-producing artistic director of A Noise Within. She said the company did not raise ticket prices for its first season in the new location.
A Noise Within’s new venue is a refurbished midcentury building originally designed by architect Edward Durell Stone. The venue features a mainstage with 283 seats. In 2008, the company announced a capital campaign of $16 million, but later reduced the goal to $13.5 million as the economy weakened.
The originally planned opening for the new venue had been set for the spring of 2010, but was eventually pushed to the fall of 2011.
The company’s new 2012-13 season has announced a new season that will feature productions of Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline,” Shaw’s “The Doctor’s Dilemma,” Thornton Wilder’s adaptation of “The Beaux’ Stratagem” by George Farquhar, Sarah Ruhl’s “Eurydice” and stage adaptations of"The Grapes of Wrath"and “A Christmas Carol.”
