Matthew Bourne, Ethan Stiefel part of Music Center’s 2013-14 season

The new 2013-14 season of Dance at the Music Center will feature works by choreographers Matthew Bourne, Ethan Stiefel and Alexei Ratmansky. The season, which the Music Center announced this week, will also include return appearances by Ballet Preljocaj and the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

The dance series -- whose full title is Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center -- will take place at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, unless otherwise noted.

As previously announced, Nederlands Dans Theater will present “Chamber” (Oct. 18-20), inspired by Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” The production will be part of the Music Center’s “Rite” festival that celebrates the piece’s centennial.

“Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty” (Nov. 21-Dec. 1) is the famed choreographer’s latest installment in his Tchaikovsky series, which also includes “Swan Lake.” The piece is a co-presentation with Center Theatre Group and will be presented at the Ahmanson Theatre.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet will perform “Giselle” (Jan. 31-Feb. 2), co-created by Stiefel, who is the company’s artistic director, and Johan Kobborg. Stiefel joined the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2011; he was a principal dancer with New York’s American Ballet Theater for many years.

“James Brown: Get on the Good Foot, a Celebration in Dance” (Feb. 14-16) is a dance homage to the soul singer with numbers performed by the Philadelphia Dance Company.

Produced by Otis Sallid, the show is a co-presentation with New York’s Apollo Theater, where it is scheduled to bow in October before touring.

Paul Taylor Dance Company will make its first appearance at the Music Center in 10 years with a diverse program (April 11-13, 2014).

France’s Ballet Preljocaj will perform “The Nights,” inspired by “One Thousand and One Nights” (June 20-22, 2014). The National Ballet of Canada will present “Romeo and Juliet” (July 10-13, 2014), featuring choreography by Ratmansky, artist in residence at American Ballet Theatre and former director of the Bolshoi Ballet.

The Music Center will separately present its annual series “World City” featuring international performing-arts groups at the W.M. Keck Foundation Children’s Amphitheatre at Disney Hall.
