Tony Awards 2014: ‘Bullets over Broadway’ has lackluster showing

Woody Allen received his first Tony Award nomination on Tuesday for writing the script for the stage musical version of his 1994 movie “Bullets over Broadway.”

But the musical was shut out of the main Tony categories and failed to land a nomination for new musical.

“Bullets,” which opened earlier this month at the St. James Theatre in New York, was expected by many theater industry watchers to be a surefire critical and commercial hit. But the show received sharply mixed reviews -- including pans by the New York Times and Los Angeles Times -- and Tuesday’s Tony announcement suggested that the nominating committee wasn’t overwhelmed by the production.

The musical received a total of six nominations, many of which were in the technical categories. Susan Stroman didn’t get a nomination for directing “Bullets,” although she did receive a nod in the choreography category.

Among the acting ensemble, only Nick Cordero received a nomination for his performance as Cheech, the mobster with hidden playwriting talents originally played on screen by Chazz Palminteri.

Allen is competing at the Tonys against fellow “Bullets” screenwriter Douglas McGrath, who was nominated for writing the book for “Beautiful -- The Carole King Musical.”

“Bullets” has been doing respectable though not blockbuster business at the box office, having grossed just under $1 million in the last two weeks.

Given Allen’s well-known aversion to award shows, the real Tony excitement surrounding “Bullets” is now whether he will show up for the ceremony, which is scheduled for June 8 at Radio City Music Hall and will air on CBS.
