L.A. Phil, U.K.’s Classic FM team for first overseas radio series

The Los Angeles Philharmonic will launch its first international radio broadcast partnership with England’s largest classical music station.

The agreement with Classic FM announced Friday includes a 14-part concert series of recorded concerts under the name “Live with the L.A. Phil,” broadcast Fridays starting June 1.

The series, which also will include interviews with featured soloists, will be online at Classicfm.com for U.K. listeners only. The series will kick off with a concert conducted by L.A. Phil music director Gustavo Dudamel featuring Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Violin Concerto with soloist Janine Jansen and Symphony No. 3, “Scottish.”

All the concerts were recorded at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, except the Mahler Symphony No. 8 concert recorded in Caracas, Venezuela, and performed by the L.A. Phil.

For the past decade, Classic FM has partnered with a range of U.K. ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia and the Sixteen. The agreement with the L.A. Phil is the first overseas partnership of this nature in the radio station’s 20-year history.

The collaboration “builds on my ongoing relationship with Classic FM, which over the years has broadcast my concerts, recordings and interviews from around the globe,” Dudamel said in a press release. “This new partnership is an important step to bring our music to more parts of the world and increase our global reach.”
