‘Monsters University,’ ‘Turbo’ top Thanksgiving week DVD sales

It looks like there will be plenty of computer animated movies underneath Christmas trees this year.

The Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios family film “Monsters University” and DreamWorks Animation’s “Turbo” took the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, on Rentrak’s DVD and Blu-ray sales chart for the week of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Both titles have been out for weeks. The holiday week was the fifth week on the home video market for “Monsters University,” the prequel to the 2001 hit “Monsters Inc.,” while “Turbo,” about a garden snail with high-speed racing dreams, had been out for three.

“Monsters University,” featuring the voices of John Goodman and Billy Crystal, reclaimed the top spot after spending the previous week at No. 6. “Turbo” was the fifth-best seller on last week’s chart.

Last week’s chart-topper, Disney’s “Planes,” fell to fourth place as Summit Entertainment’s “Red 2,” the action comedy sequel with Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren, debuted in third place.

“Red 2” was not a huge hit in theaters or among critics. It drew a 41% “fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes, which aggregates movie reviews, and hauled in $53.3 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada.

“The Heat,” a buddy-cop comedy with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, was the top rental for the second straight week.

Here are Rentrak’s rankings for the week that ended Nov. 30 for sales and Dec. 1 for rentals.
