‘Shannara Chronicles’ trailer looks like ‘Lord of the Rings’ set on a post-apocalyptic Earth

The wildly popular YA book series “The Shannara Chronicles” from author Terry Brooks has been circled for television and movie development for years. And now MTV has finally stepped up, blending “The Lord of the Rings” stylings with “Game of Thrones” action with a dash of teenage angst.

“Shannara” is set thousands of years in the future on a very different Earth (now called the Four Lands). The future world is very different; for example, Earth now has Elves. According to MTV, the television series will follow the half-elf, half-human character Wil and human Eretria as they both try to rid their world of an evil demon army.

And this synopsis reveal leads us to believe that the TV adaptation will be inspired more by the second book in the “Shannara” series, “The Elfstones of Shannara,” than the first, “The Sword of Shannara.” There are 26 books in the Shannara series; the first one was published in 1977.
