Monaco is marking the 25th anniversary of Princess Grace’s death with a special exhibition on her life. “The Grace Kelly Years” provides a detailed look at the woman who grew up to be a movie star and a princess. (Michael Steele / Getty Images)

The aim of the exhibit, according to the curator, Frederic Mitterrand, a nephew of the late French president, is to reveal a Grace Kelly truer than the tabloid image he thinks many people hold of the late princess, especially Americans. (EPA)

Most of the items on display in the exhibit were in palace archives, but many of Princess Grace’s old friends and associates were contacted in case they had any artifacts from her to contribute. Her wedding dress was returned to Monaco for the first time since being donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art by Princess Grace. (EPA)

The exhibit’s displays are organized in about 30 vast rooms that take visitors through Princess Grace’s life. The “Philadelphia Room,” “New York Room” and “Hollywood Room” are the biggest. “The Secret Woman” is the most intimate. (EPA)

A former royal spokesman in Monaco says an exhibition like “The Grace Kelly Years” would have been unlikely during Prince Rainier’s reign. “He would have thought it was like exposing their lives,” the former spokesman said. (EPA)

The items in the exhibit, many of which have never been seen before, are set against a backdrop of clips from some of Kelly’s 11 movies, her Oscar acceptance speech, old newscast-style film of her transatlantic voyage to her Monaco wedding, and family home movies. (EPA)

Kelly, who would be 77 years old had she lived, apparently felt that her life was more complex than people realized. “Fairytales are about imaginary people,” read Kelly’s words scrolling across the wall in French in the stark room that opens the exhibition. “But me, I’m a person who exists.” (EPA)

The exhibition’s curator hopes “people will come away with a sense of how tender” Grace Kelly was. “She also had a streak of melancholy and was never totally at peace. But she truly understood the art of living.” (Valery Hache AFP/Getty Images)
