Best of Comic-Con ’09

Take "Alice in Wonderland," and add Tim Burton, and weirdness is a given. But there’s heft underneath this odd story, Burton said. It’s clear from the trailer – leaked before Comic-Con, and made official during – that Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter is made over into a starring character, someone who leads Alice into a world, rather than simply helps her pass through it.

It’s no wonder Peter Jackson made a first-ever Comic-Con appearance to stump for “District 9,” a low-budget sci-fi thriller he produced for director Neill Blomkamp. The “Clerks” and “Mallrats” director is known for his frank and frankly raunchy talks, but he defended a Comic-Con presentation that had been receiving some backlash from attendees. He praised its fans and berated anyone who’d be “out there in a ‘ Star Trek’ costume” saying that they didn’t belong there.
