The current state of ‘Star Trek’

After several "Trek"-less years following the cancellation of "Star Trek: Enterprise" in 2005, the long-running franchise looks to be making a comeback in a big way. And to make its intentions known, Paramount is carting the entire cast down to Australia for a massive April 7 premiere at the Sydney Opera House. But what about the other aspects of the "Trek" empire? Here's what fans can expect in the next few days, weeks, months (and possibly years).

Fans and studio executives alike are looking to the May 8 release of J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek” film as a chance for franchise rebirth. After several “Trek”-less years following the cancellation of “Star Trek: Enterprise” in 2005, the long-running franchise looks to be making a comeback in a big way. And to make its intentions known, Paramount is carting the entire cast down to Australia for a massive April 7 premiere at the Sydney Opera House.

New 'Trek' on TV?

What? “Pushing Daisies” creator Bryan Fuller recently told iF Magazine that he’s pitched an idea for a new “Star Trek” TV series to his agent and the people on J.J. Abrams’ team. The plan, according to Fuller, is to bring back the sense of fun the original ‘60s series had. “Somehow, it got cold over the years,” he told the magazine.

When? Maybe soon, maybe never. The ways of Hollywood are more mysterious than those of the Q Continuum. But one thing’s for sure, Fuller is a true Trekker -- those are his personal “Star Trek” figurines on display in his Silver Lake home.   (Barbara Davidson / Los Angeles Times)

'Star Trek: The Experience'

What? The live-action interactive “experience” opened at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1998 and added the “Borg Invasion 4-D” expansion in 2004. The attraction closed in 2008 due to declining attendance. But it was recently announced that the attraction would reopen at Las Vegas’ Neonopolis Mall on May 8 to coincide with the release of the new “Star Trek” movie.
