Charlie Hunter, Scott Amendola take their jazz to the Mint

Was there a record released this year more colored by the economic uncertainty of 2012 than Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola’s “Not Getting Behind Is the New Getting Ahead”? In the self-released duet that’s a testament to a partnership that began in the fertile San Francisco jazz scene, Hunter sounds as mind-scrambling as ever on a seven-string guitar (enabling him to spin both bass and melody lines simultaneously), and Amendola is with him every step of the way in wryly titled songs such as “Those Desks Aren’t Going to Clean Themselves” that carry the sting of the modern day blues.
