Demi Moore boots @mrskutcher, debuts new name on Twitter
Demi Moore has scored one for the single women: She’s landed one that’s fun, playful and available.
In this case, it’s her new Twitter name.
“So hard finding a name that was fun somewhat playful and available. So for now it will be @justdemi,” she wrote Thursday night in announcing the new handle and thanking her followers for their help. “It could grow on me!”
Moore’s November announcement that she intended to divorce Ashton Kutcher quickly made it clear that she should ditch her high-profile @mrskutcher moniker, but the actress-producer had some other business to take care of first.
A media explosion in September around allegations of infidelity by Kutcher on the couple’s sixth-anniversary weekend was only one part of a public unraveling that ultimately saw Moore hospitalized and headed for rehab.
“changing my twitter name isn’t a top priority right now,” Moore said in December, when her follower count stood at 4.4 million. “sorry it bothers so many of u. should I not tweet until I do? does it really matter?”
A little more than a month later, her friends were calling 911 and she was seeking “professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health,” reportedly entering rehab at the Cirque Lodge in Utah. Simultaneously, she wound up spending more than three months away from Twitter, the social-media platform she and Kutcher had occupied so prominently as a couple.
In the wee hours Friday, shortly after she announced the change to @justdemi, Moore’s follower count climbed past 5 million. Kutcher’s @aplusk tally, meanwhile, was cruising around 10.5 million, up from 8 million or so in December.
