Nicholas Payton plays the Mint

New Orleans-based trumpeter Nicholas Payton describes his music under the umbrella of Black American Music (or #BAM for short), in a break from the term “jazz.” But for anyone with an interest in the sound of the genre past, present or future, his talents remain required viewing. A recent turn at the Hollywood Bowl enlivened a night-long tribute to Louis Armstrong, and his 2013 album “#BAM: Live at Bohemian Caverns” shows him in excellent, uncompromisingly inventive form.
