Frank Ocean cited for speeding, pot possession on New Year’s Eve

R&B; star Frank Ocean, the Odd Future member whose solo debut “Channel Orange” topped many critics’ lists of the best albums of 2012, capped the year in a less-than-celebratory way: He was pulled over for speeding and cited for pot possession in Northern California.

Ocean, whose given name is Christopher Breaux, was stopped by California Highway Patrol and Mono County sheriff’s officers on New Year’s Eve after they observed his black BMW speeding on U.S. Highway 395, according to Mono County Sheriff’s public information officer Jennifer Hansen.

“As the deputy approached the vehicle, a strong odor of marijuana came from inside the car,” said a sheriff’s department statement released Thursday. “Christopher Breaux, aka Frank Ocean, age 25, of Beverly Hills, CA, had a small bag of marijuana on his person. Mr. Breaux was cited for possession of marijuana and released. This incident has been forwarded to the Mono County District Attorney’s Office for review.”

In addition to marijuana possession, Ocean was cited for speeding by the CHP deputy, and his driver’s license, which previously had been suspended, was confiscated. Officers instructed Ocean to allow his passenger (who has not been identified) to take over driving duties.

Ocean reportedly was briefly detained in one of the law enforcement vehicles, and on Tuesday he tweeted an Instagram photo showing his backseat perspective, captioned with the words “worst trip ever.”
