Kirby Dick’s “The Invisible War,” and Malik Bendjelloul’s film “Searching for Sugarman” are among the five feature-length documentaries nominated by the International Documentary Assn. for its 2012 IDA Documentary Awards.

“The Central Park Five” by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon also received a nomination. The film recounts the high-profile trial and wrongful conviction of five young men in one of New York’s most sensational criminal cases.

Lauren Greenfield’s nominated film “Queen of Versailles” is a portrait of a billionaire couple and their downfall during the economic crisis. It opened in July and has earned $2.3 million at the box office.

The fifth film on the list is Peter Gerdehag’s film “Women With Cows,” which centers on two sisters bound together by the family farm.

“This year’s documentaries have once again shown us the power of the documentary art form,” said IDA executive director Michael Lumpkin. “The record number of submissions we received reflects the cultural relevance of documentary storytelling.”

Dick’s “The Invisible War” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it was awarded the audience award for best documentary. An investigative look at the prevalence of rape within the American military, “The Invisible War,” opened in theaters in June.

“Searching for Sugarman,” which traces the mysterious disappearance and presumed death of ‘70s musician Rodriguez, hit theaters in limited release in late July and grossed just under $2 million domestically.

“The Central Park Five,” which has gained a lot of attention on the festival circuit, focuses on the 1989 New York City case in which five black and Latino teenagers were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park.

The IDA Awards will take place at the Director’s Guild on Dec. 7. Click here for a complete list of nominees.
