Toronto 2012: Deal-making continues as fest’s final weekend nears

Mira Nair’s latest film, a Holocaust documentary, Edward Burns’ new family drama and a documentary about the world of illicit drug dealing all found distribution after screening at the Toronto International Film Festival this past week.

IFC Films bought all North American rights to Nair’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist,” which debuted at the Venice International Film Festival. The film, which stars Liev Schreiber, Kate Hudson, Riz Ahmed and Kiefer Sutherland, is based on a novel by Mohsin Hamid. It centers on an ambitious Wall Street employee (Ahmed) who returns to Pakistan after 9/11 and gets caught up with a group of fundamentalists.

IFC, which financed Nair’s hit film “Monsoon Wedding,” has not determined when the film will hit theaters.

Magnolia Pictures acquired Janet Tobias’ documentary “No Place on Earth,” which tells the story of 38 Ukrainian Jews who survived WWII by living in caves for 18 months. The indie outfit intends to release the film, which serves as Tobias’ directorial debut (she was a producer for “60 Minutes” and “Nightline”), theatrically next year.

Tribeca Films has made two acquisitions at this year’s festival, scooping up North American rights to the documentary “How to Make Money Selling Drugs,” and Burns’ film “The Fitzgerald Family Christmas.”

“Selling Drugs” comes from director Matthew Cooke and producers Bert Marcus and actor Adrian Grenier, the duo that previously worked together on “Teenage Paparazzo.” The distributor plans a 2013 release for the film, which takes an in-depth look into both sides of the drug war and features interviews with 50 Cent, drug kingpin “Freeway” Rick Ross and Woody Harrelson, among others.

Burns (“The Brothers McMullen”) has continued his tradition of making low-budget family dramas with “Fitzgerald,” which he stars in opposite “McMullen” alums Connie Britton and Michael McGlone. Tribeca, which distributed Burns’ last film, “Newlyweds,” will debut the film theatrically and via digital platforms in November to coincide with the holiday movie-going season.
