“Inside Out” and Charlie Kaufman’s “Anomalisa” were among 16 movies that have been submitted for consideration in the animated feature Oscar race, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday.

“Inside Out,” the Pixar film directed and co-written by Pete Docter (who took home an Oscar in 2010 in this category for “Up”), has made more than $355 million so far, the third best of all films released in 2015. It was joined on the Academy’s list by “Minions,” the Universal hit that has made more than $335 million and sits at No. 5 in the 2015 box office rankings.

Those heavyweights are balanced on the academy’s list by indie projects and lesser known titles. “Anomalisa,” which opens Dec. 30, is the brainchild of writer-director Kaufman, along with animation guru Duke Johnson. The stop-motion animation picture concerns a British-born inspirational speaker (voiced by David Thewlis) who, on a business trip from his home in Los Angeles to Cincinnati, has fraught encounters with a number of women (including one voiced by Jennifer Jason Leigh). Aimed at adult audiences, “Anomalisa” took home the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival in September.
