‘Fantastic Four’ casting of Teller and Jordan an ‘Awkward’ reunion

If you’re one of the few people who saw Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller trading quips and bro-ing down in “That Awkward Moment,” you’ll already have a sense of their easy chemistry. The rest of us will have another chance to see them palling around — this time presumably in spandex bodysuits — in the upcoming “Fantastic Four” reboot.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jordan and Teller are in final negotiations to star in the new movie as the flame-powered Human Torch and the elastic genius Mr. Fantastic, respectively. Kate Mara is also being tapped to play the Invisible Woman, and Jamie Bell is eyeing the rocky strongman the Thing.

Josh Trank, who directed Jordan in the superpower-themed found-footage movie “Chronicle,” will helm the new “Fantastic Four.”

If the casting holds, Jordan and Teller will no doubt hope for a better outing than they had with “That Awkward Moment.” That film’s performance has been less than super, grossing a modest $9 million on its opening weekend and failing to impress critics.

Despite “That Awkward Moment’s” underperformance, a number of critics had good things to say about Teller and Jordan’s work in the film, and the two actors have otherwise been hailed as rising stars.

Jordan had a breakthrough role on the HBO series “The Wire” and earned widespread critical acclaim last year with his performance as Oscar Grant in the fact-based drama “Fruitvale Station,” about the killing of a young African-American man by transit police in Oakland.

Teller similarly received strong notices last year for his performance as a charming but troubled high school senior in the coming-of-age film “The Spectacular Now.” His upcoming film “Whiplash,” about the fraught relationship between teacher and student at a New York music school, was the talk of the Sundance Film Festival, where it took top audience and grand jury awards.

If the “Fantastic Four” reboot succeeds, it could spawn a blockbuster franchise and launch Teller and Jordan to mainstream stardom. It could also prove “Awkward Moment” to have been just that in their careers.
