In the Army now: ‘Big Parade,’ ‘From Here to Eternity’ on Blu-ray
Both in wartime and in peace, men in the U.S. Army have been the heart of some of the most celebrated of American films, and new Blu-ray editions of two of them are marching onto shelves.
Earliest of the pair is 1925’s World War I drama “The Big Parade,” directed by King Vidor and starring heartthrob John Gilbert as a carefree young American who experiences the horrors of war in France and falls in love with a young Frenchwoman played by Renée Adorée.
Except for “The Artist,” this is the highest-grossing silent film of all time.

The great “From Here to Eternity,” winner of eight Oscars, including best picture of 1953, is set just before the outbreak of World War II, but that doesn’t stop it from bursting with conflicts.
Great performances by Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Donna Reed and Deborah Kerr make this one of the great films of the 1950s, with one of the most famous embraces in movie history added into the bargain.
