‘Tomorrowland’ trailer: George Clooney tries to fix the future

“Tomorrowland” became ever-so-slightly less mysterious Monday with the release of the first full trailer for the Disney sci-fi film.

Directed by Brad Bird, “Tomorrowland” centers on a jaded scientist (George Clooney) who helps a bright teenager (Britt Robertson) travel to a high-tech wonderland somewhere in time and space. Their goal is nothing less than to “fix the future,” according to a grave-sounding Hugh Laurie, but the clock is ticking.

“Every second that ticks by, the future is running out,” Clooney says at the beginning of the clip.

In terms of plot details, that’s about all the new trailer has to offer, which is in keeping with the shroud of mystery Bird has wrapped around the film. The “Incredibles” and “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” director wrote the script with Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the famously inscrutable TV series “Lost,” and it looks as if moviegoers are in for a similar level of head-spinning intrigue.

The trailer does showcase more of the movie’s eye-catching visuals, especially in shots of Tomorrowland itself — a retro-futuristic metropolis filled with flying cars, curvilinear skyways, gleaming towers and dueling robots. (Back in boring old today-land, Clooney’s character also has a bathtub that turns into a rocket ship, so there’s that.)

Along with determining the fate of the future itself, “Tomorrowland” also promises to test Clooney’s ability to anchor a summer tent-pole and to serve as Robertson’s introduction to mainstream audiences.

The film hits theaters May 22.
