There’s a Japanese Donald Trump commercial – kinda

Share

Donald Trump has mixed reviews in Japan.

He’s riled up politicians by suggesting that Japan should get nukes, he’s said that Japan should pay more for U.S. bases in its country, and even criticized Japan’s auto industry.

So what better way to win his Japanese doubters over than with a cute Japanese music video?

First off, a caveat: This isn't a sanctioned campaign ad —  it’s a parody, produced by Los Angeles-based video director Mike Diva

But, in an alternate reality where it was somehow necessary to appeal to the niche “cutesy-nihilist Japanese psychedelic robot anime fan” demographic, this is the ad Trump would want.

That was probably a lot to take in, so let’s attempt to explain what's going on.

The story begins as any good story does — in a bedroom, adorned with Trump posters and memorabilia.

A young woman, who we are made to understand is Japanese, gazes adoringly at a pink-framed Trump photograph.

Hand-drawn Trump images are scattered across her desk.

Suddenly, the television screen turns on, to announce that Trump has been “Elected World President.” This is a strange development, considering that Trump is not running for “World President." Perhaps stranger still is the fact that the Japanese text on the right side of the screen, which translates to “Fire: Trump is God.”

Both of these revelations seem to please our blue-haired heroine.

So, naturally, she transforms, “Sailor Moon”-style, into a sparkly tutu princess. In the background is a strangely menacing eagle, perhaps a Nazi Reichsadler eagle reference to serve as foreshadowing for one of the rather unsavory salutes that the “Donald Trump” character will later make.

The woman soars through a vaporwave fever dream of a Trump paradise. She zooms past neon cloud buildings and into the stone mouth of a floating Trump island.

Once inside, she frolics through a field of Trump cherry blossoms.

There’s also a scene where a row of pink camouflage tanks raise their cannons in salute to a marble Trump statue, as a squadron of fighter jets scream overhead, under a dreamy purple sky.

Most of the Japanese captions on the screen simply say “Trump,” though there’s also scattered references to a “World President” and a bit of text that is either a reference to an 18th century German philosopher or a word that cannot be printed here because this is a family newspaper website.

Near the end of the video, Trump and the young woman embrace. They are suddenly swept up into an Evangelion-esque fighting robot. The phrase “Trump Banzai” decorates the bottom third of the screen.

The robot creates a massive wall, like the one Trump has promised to build between the U.S. and Mexico (except cuter and more pink).

In a strange twist, the robot zooms out to space and destroys planet Earth.

It’s difficult to make heads or tails of this video, but it seems safe to assume the creator isn’t a Trump supporter. Or, if he is, he's got a very creative way of showing his support.

Anyway, the music is brilliant.
