‘The Voice’ winner Cassadee Pope debuts new series and album

When Cassadee Pope took the crown in the third season of “The Voice” late last year, the clock started ticking. Like many a winner before her, she had to quickly cash in on her new-found fame before a new season of replacement contestants stole viewer interest.

While the show’s competitor “American Idol” has turned out successful acts like Kelly Clarkson and Phillip Phillips, NBC’s hit competition, despite its formidable ratings, has yet to churn out viable pop stars.

Inaugural winner Javier Colon was dropped from Republic Records after dismal sales of his debut album, and Season 2 winner Jermaine Paul has yet to even issue an album.

Needless to say, Pope has a lot stacked against her. Another champion was crowned in June, and the search for the next “Voice” winner is already underway, but Pope is ready to make her debut. Hopefully she’ll have better luck than that of her predecessors.

The singer will issue her debut album, “Frame by Frame,” on Tuesday. But first she’s returning to television, this time with a reality vehicle for CMT.

“Cassadee Pope: Frame by Frame” is a six-part docu-series that trails Pope as she begins the transition from reality show winner to full-fledged artist.

The series, which premieres Friday, begins as Pope readies a radio promo tour and continues through the shooting of her first music video.

On “The Voice,” Pope won over viewers with her desire to break away from her pop-punk outfit Hey Monday, where she found modest success, and return to her roots as a country singer. Under the tutelage of country star Blake Shelton, she easily took the competition thanks to stunning vocals and performances of Avril Lavigne, Faith Hill, Rascal Flats and Clarkson.

Pope’s CMT show doesn’t stray from the tried-and-true formula we’ve seen from countless other singers looking for a reality vehicle to launch a project.

Footage is largely taken from handheld cameras and is focused heavily on promoting the album. There’s some behind the scenes juice that fans will enjoy: Pope crafting songs, trying to figure out the single, offering acoustic previews of the album. But there’s not enough here to carry a visually interesting show, regardless of it being six episodes.

Maybe it will ramp up after the premiere, but the 30-minute premiere (it’s currently available on CMT’s site) quickly became a bore.

The series is solely for arduous fans. You don’t learn much, if anything, about Pope in the premiere, other than she really wants the country music thing to work out. Her talent -- and she has tons of it -- can ease those worries. But fans would rather listen to the music than watch a long, drawn-out advertisement for the album.

As for the music, Pop & Hiss has an exclusive premiere of “One Song Away,” listed from Pope’s upcoming album. Listen below:
