The Weeknd arrested over weekend for allegedly punching police officer

The Weeknd’s songs are rife with late-night misbehavior. But they’re much less alluring when the actual police get involved.

The experimental R&B singer born Abel Tesfaye was arrested early Saturday morning in Las Vegas at the Cromwell hotel on the Strip. Police arrived at the hotel after reports of an altercation around 4:20 a.m.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Laura Meltzer told Billboard that when officers intervened, Tesfaye allegedly struck one of them in the head with his fist.

The singer was then booked on one count of misdemeanor battery of a protected person. Later that night, Tesfaye posted bail - and posted a picture to Instagram that showed him walking to a private plane. The picture was captioned “Escaped from Las Vegas.”

The Weeknd recently headlined the Hollywood Bowl with ScHoolboy Q and Jhene Aiko, and released a new single, “Earned It,” for the much-anticipated “50 Shades of Grey” soundtrack.
