Dr. Phil on Twitter: ‘Is it OK to have sex with a drunk girl?’

Share

TV personality Dr. Phil received an overwhelming number of negative responses on social media after he tweeted a controversial question: “If a girl is drunk, is it OK to have sex with her?”

The tweet was posted for all of his 1.17 million followers plus the rest of the twittersphere to see around 5 p.m. Tuesday, but it has since been deleted. Dr. Phil asked Twitter users to reply yes or no and included #teensaccused.

#DrPhilQuestions started trending with users replying to the question, most accusing Dr. Phil of promoting rape culture while others joked about the tweet or said Dr. Phil did nothing wrong.

The talk show host often tweets questions related to topics of upcoming shows but none have prompted a Change.org petition like this one did.

Carmen Rios, a former college sexual assault activist who started the petition, is asking the producers of the show to air a segment on consent, rape and sexual assault. The petition currently has more than 750 signatures.

Producers have not responded to the petition, but a spokesperson for the show did give a statement to Buzzfeed.

“This tweet was intended to evoke discussion leading into a very serious show topic. It was not intended to be taken lightly,” the spokesperson told Buzzfeed. “It’s based upon a recent news story, hence the #teensaccused label.”

There’s no word yet on the exact subject matter of the “teens accused” episode or when it will air.
