Oscar winner Halle Berry is joining forces with the History cable channel to develop “Hannibal,” a miniseries about the legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca.

Berry will be an executive producer of the project, which will be written by Jeffrey Caine (“The Constant Gardener,” “Goldeneye”).

“Hannibal is not only the greatest African general to ever live,” Berry said in a statement. “He may have been the greatest general, period. His story is an intricate and captivating ride and I’m thrilled to get this project off the ground with our partners at History.”

As envisioned by the producers, the miniseries will begin in Carthage 264 BC at the start of Hannibal’s life in North Africa, and extend through the Second Punic War between Carthage and Rome.

Barcas and archenemy Scipiuo Africanus each take a sacred vow to not only destroy the other, but the nation each serves. But despite their fiercely opposed allegiances, the two men are united and come to respect each other as brothers.
