The ever-fabulous Diane von Furstenberg transported us to the Cote D’Azur (where else?) with her spring collection shown Sunday afternoon at Spring Studios, with the sunlight streaming onto the runway off the Hudson through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The collection wasn’t difficult to understand. You know the look—Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s, tousled hair, tanned midriff, gingham bandeau top, short shorts, short skirt…French chic.

It was sweeter and less complicated than what we’ve seen from the designer recently. No sweaty Studio 54 nights, pop art patterns or David Bowie glam, just sunny summer memories.

Key pieces: Black and white gingham wrap top and full short skirt. Pink toile coat and shirt dress. Blue floral poplin shirt tucked into high waist flared denim pants. Black and white stripe lace tunic and mini skirt. White pique jacket and shorts. Black and white gingham top and flared pants embellished with tile sequins. Gingham clutch bags and high heel sandals.

The verdict: The clothes were feminine and pretty, and the collection touched on several of the season’s emerging trends, namely flared pants, gingham checks and shirt dresses. After last year’s 40th anniversary extravaganza, and “Journey of a Dress” exhibition, it felt like Von Furstenberg was starting fresh with this tightly-edited collection, beginning her next chapter in the sun.
